tween waters blues on the beach

Do you love the blues? Do you love the beach? Here’s your chance to experience both — for the first time ever on Sanibel and Captiva Islands — when Blues on the Beach takes the stage at ’Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa. Saturday December 14, from 7 pm – 10 pm, our private resort beach comes alive with the amazing sounds of three of Florida’s top next generation blues artists, including singer-songwriter-guitarists David Julia (18), Trey Wanvig (17) and local sensation Johnny Jensen (16).

To celebrate the occasion ‘Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa has created an added-value 2-Night “Blues Weekend” offer that includes guestrooms from only $215 per night — with every Friday-Saturday night stay including 2 FREE TICKETS to the concert per bedroom, per guestroom. That means if you book a 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom accommodation, you’ll receive 2, 4 or 6 free tickets. Availability is limited, so to book your Blues Weekend now click here (enter “blues” in Special Requests Comment field at online checkout) or call on-site reservationists at 800.223.5865.

About the Players

At age 18, David Julia is a guitar prodigy who calls Central Florida home but who’s made his musical mark across the country. Since picking up the guitar as a 7-year-old, he’s grown his craft and honed his vocal and guitar skills under the tutelage of blues master guitarist Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin — with whom he recently collaborated on an album entitled “Inspired.” His blues style is described as both “contemporary and traditional electric blues.” Learn more about David Julia here.

Hailing from Sarasota, Trey Wanvig is 17 years old with a resume that already rocks. Trey has performed at numerous blues and music festivals including the Bradenton Blues Festival, Dallas International Guitar Festival, B.B. King’s in Memphis, Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa and even aboard the Allure of the Sea, one of Royal Caribbean’s “Oasis Class” cruise ships. Wanvig has performed alongside many great artists including Shemekia Copeland, Annika Chambers, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Bryan Lee, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson. Learn more about Trey Wanvig here.

Local favorite Johnny Jensen has been banging the drums and playing guitar from the age of two. Growing up on Captiva Island, he wasn’t much older than a toddler when he joined his Uncle Jimmy and band the Troublestarters for weekend jams at Jensen’s Marina & Cottages. Today, Johnny’s played everywhere from Fort Myers to Nashville, and has opened for a number of headline national touring acts — all before or at the age of 16 years. Only the Best: For Our Guests and Our Islands.

sanibel captiva beach resorts business of the year 2019

All of us at Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts are proud to share some very exciting news: your favorite island destination marketing organization has been named 2019’s “Business of the Year” by the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented recently at the Chamber’s annual meeting.

Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce President John Lai noted that the corporation, under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Tony Lapi and Chief Operating Officer Doug Babcock, “has given back greatly to our community with their resources and time. This award recognizes their tremendous generosity over the years.”

“All of us at Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts are thrilled with this honor,” Babcock noted. “In particular, both Tony and I want to thank all of our 250-plus employees across our resorts, vacation rental company, restaurants, marinas and spa for living our mission of making our guest experiences so outstanding they return year after year, and sometimes, generation after generation.” Mr. Babcock (with wife Paige) accepted the award in Mr. Lapi’s absence.

In 1931, the aptly named ‘Tween Waters Inn welcomed its first overnight guests to Captiva Island and a history of hospitality that now spans two centuries was born. Forty-five years later, a young man from Rochester, New York — Tony Lapi — and his partners made ‘Tween Waters Inn the first lodging brand under the newly formed Rochester Resorts.

That company — today known as Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts — has grown to become among the largest and most successful destination, marketing and management organizations in Southwest Florida. The company’s portfolio includes the historic ‘Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa of Captiva Island; West Wind Inn, Beachview Cottages and Castaways Cottages of Sanibel Island; and Sanibel Captiva Island Vacation Rentals (with more than 150 premier properties).

SCBR also operates five outstanding and top-rated dining destinations including the landmark Old Captiva House, Crow’s Nest Bar & Grille, and Normandie Seaside Cafe — as well as two marinas, a fitness center, wedding and meeting facilities, plus day spa.

As part of its mission, Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts has committed hundreds of thousands of dollars to island causes — particularly those that support the protection and preservation of our ocean, environment and wildlife. “We’re eager and enthusiastic to be a part of Southwest Florida’s economy, as well as many of our region’s very important water quality and environment efforts,” Babcock added.

‘Tween Waters March Madness

It’s March and it’s madness on the islands. From traffic to guests, it is the ultimate of high season right now. But despite some of the traffic woes, it is also the perfect time of the year to visit! From crystal blue waters to stunning Greenflash sunsets, my ‘Tweenies bracket is the ultimate March Madness competition.

It’s difficult to give seeds to all of the great things this resort has to offer, so they are all on even playing field. But there are some obvious favorites: Sunrises and Sunsets, Shelling, Sugar-Sand Beaches, the Crab Races and Historic Cottages.

For me, there’s it’s no contest. I live for the sunsets on these islands. They are like none other. I placed shelling as my runner up and here’s why — although I can only handle shelling in small doses, it is by far the most unique thing about these islands. You can’t go to Anna Maria Island, Siesta Key or the Gulf Shores and shell like you can on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. The treasures are endless here, and you’ll never see a sight quite like millions of shells washed ashore.

All of the selections that made the bracket are worthy of mentioning. From an on-property marina, to historic, award-winning dining at Old Captiva House, to live music at the Crow’s Nest and a massage at the Spa.

But March Madness is about those Cinderella stories too. Those upsets that make it from the bottom to the top on sheer will and a little bit of magic. For me, those picks would be the Serenity pool and renovated rooms. I love these newer elements of the resort, and for me, they are true underdogs I can appreciate.

No matter how you fill out your ‘Tween Waters bracket, you’ll find it to be tough competition!
