Winter, Captiva-Style, at ‘Tween Waters Inn

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and I have to agree. Winter on Captiva is fantastic. The weather is delightful, the shells are plentiful, and there are lots of ways to celebrate the season.

Snow Party at ‘Tween Waters

Every Friday and Saturday at 6pm from Dec 1, 2017 – Jan 27, 2018, bring the family and enjoy our tropical version of a Snow Party – no coats or mittens required! Enjoy all of the snow, and none of the cold.

Frozen drinks poolside

In need of something cold? Head to the Oasis Pool Bar and order your favorite frozen concoction. There are also frozen treats for the kids, and if you purchase a Tervis tumbler while you’re here with the ‘Tween Waters logo, you’ll get a coupon for a free piña colada.

Snowy Egrets

The yellow feet of this small white heron make them easy to identify. Look for these slender and elegant white birds at the marina, dancing along the shore at the beach, and at J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge.

Brightening Vitamin C Facial

Be merry and bright all season with this special vitamin rich facial at the Spa at ‘Tween Waters Inn. This 50-minute treatment can even out your skin tone and lighten discoloration.

Ice Cold Sushi

Tuesday through Saturday evenings, Captiva House Seafood Restaurant offers fresh, creative sushi. My son’s favorite is the “Sanibel Island” roll with tempura shrimp, cream cheese, cucumber, crab, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. Yum!

Sand Angels

Ever tried making the Captiva version of a snow angel? It’s easy! Or, channel your inner “Frozen” characters and build a Frozen castle at the beach. (And try not to sing, “Let It Go” too many times – unless your kids ask you to.)

Cool Live Web Cam

This is so cool! Check out the live Beach Cam at ‘Tween Waters Inn! Log on and you’ll see Santa’s sleigh and other holiday decorations in the foreground – and the shimmering Gulf of Mexico in the background. What a sight!

From my family to yours, I wish you a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy 2018.

Irish and Easter Fun at ‘Tween Waters Inn

March is a magical time at ‘Tween Waters Inn. In addition to a St. Patrick’s Day party at Crow’s Nest on the 17th, and a spectacular Easter buffet at Captiva House on the 27th, there are lots of ways to celebrate spring and ‘get lucky’ with fun happenings around the island all month long.

The Lions Club of Sanibel and Captiva has its annual arts and craft festival the weekend of March 17, 18 and 19. It takes place from 9am to 5pm at the island’s Community Center and the suggested entry donation is $5.

See the Easter Bunny and hunt for eggs at the Children’s Spring Festival, Saturday, March 26, 2016. Egg hunts, a giant slide, pony rides, games, crafts, face painting…all the things a kid would love. Hours are 10am to 1pm at the Community Park on Periwinkle. Activity armbands are $10.

Easter Sunday, you’ll find a bountiful buffet at Captiva House from 11:30am to 6pm. The displays are a feast for the eyes and the carving station and buffet will please even the pickiest eaters.  Call for reservations, 239-472-5161, ext. 421.

The Sanibel Farmers Market happens every Sunday through April, but it’s far from typical. In addition to fruits and veggies, you’ll find a plethora of culinary delights, from brick-oven pizzas and BBQ to lobster rolls and German bratwurst. Hours are 8am to 1pm.

Consider yourself lucky? Here are two things even the locals wish for:

See the elusive green flash. Just as a rainbow is created under certain conditions, a green flash is an atmospheric event. It is caused when light refracts, usually in a cloudless and cool sky. It will only last a second or two so don’t blink as the sun’s last rays are setting into the water, right in front of the resort.

Find a Junonia. You’ll make everyone green with envy if you find one. This gorgeous seashell is on every sheller’s bucket list. You can even get your picture in the local paper if you find one.

I wish you the luck of the Irish this month and every month, and Easter blessings.

Holiday Fun on Captiva Island

It’s the most wonderful time of the year on Captiva and Sanibel – yes, yes, fall IS wonderful but the winter holidays are right around the corner – and the time to book your stay is NOW. It is truly magical on the island around the holidays…palms trees are wrapped in twinkling lights, carolers sing the classics, there’s a perfect bit of chill in the air (average high is 76° and the average low is 55°) and then there’s Captiva Holiday Village.

Captiva Holiday Village is a holiday celebration, Captiva style. No matter what weekend you visit during the holidays, there is something tropically spectacular for you to enjoy. They’ll be things like fireworks, concerts, a decorated golf cart parade, street dancers, a lighted boat parade and the nearly famous Marching Mullet Band Parade. In all, it’s five weekends of holiday fun for all ages and it all kicks off on Thanksgiving weekend and runs through New Year’s.

Of course, one of the highlights of Captiva Holiday Village is ‘Tween Waters Inn and their holiday lights and decorations. The annual tree lighting event is the evening after Thanksgiving but you can see the lights nightly through the beginning of January 2016.

Captiva House and Crow’s Nest will be featuring special holiday menus and menu items for you and your family so you can have a true taste of the holidays as well.

(Please note that Thanksgiving is about sold out at ‘Tween Waters Inn already so make reservations for your December/winter break/holiday/New Year’s island vacation today!) I hope to see you there.

‘Tween Waters Inn Tree Lighting Ceremony

Christmas Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony

Can we do this every year, Mama?” asked my youngest son as we stood on the beach with sand between our toes. It was 2012, the fiery sun had just set and the sky was turning dark — which meant it was finally time for the grand lighting of the ‘Tween Waters Inn Christmas tree! Families were cheering, live music was playing, and kids were dancing right out of their colorful Crocs. The excitement was contagious!

If you’ve never experienced the ‘Tween Waters Inn Tree Lighting Ceremony, it happens each year on the Friday night after Thanksgiving (and it’s not just the huge Christmas tree that officially lights up, it’s all the holiday lights at ‘Tween Waters Inn), you simply won’t ever want to be anywhere else on that evening. Ever.

The entire event has a Disney-like quality with the synchronization of music and lights, the festive atmosphere, stately palms wrapped in green twinkling lights, the jolly man himself (Santa in a golf cart!), and a sea of joyful faces. Oh, and the fireworks! This is why my answer was, “YES, son! We can definitely do this every year!”

‘Tween Waters Inn annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will happen on Friday, November 28, 2014. The fun begins at 4pm and culminates at 7pm with their fantastic fireworks finale. This is a free event and it’s open to the public.

If you can’t make it to the Tree Lighting Ceremony, plan to visit any weekend in December to partake of Captiva Holiday Village. They’ll be golf cart parades, a lighted boat parade, sunset arias (live opera) on the beach, caroling, and much more.

‘Tis the season to experience all the sparkling wonders of Captiva and ‘Tween Waters Inn. Hope to see you there!
